Greenway/Upper Kirby spans over a 2.97-square-mile (7.7 km2) area, enclosed by Westheimer Road to the north, Bissonnet Street on the south, Uptown Houston to the west, and Shepherd Drive on the east side. Greenway/Upper Kirby had an estimated population of 21,120 in 2015 and a population density of 7,111/sqm. Conveniently situated just 7 minutes from the Galleria, 10 minutes from Midtown and 12 minutes from NRG stadium, Greenway/Upper Kirby makes a fantastic neighborhood to live in. Despite being near} it all, you will feel far enough the large Galleria traffic. In addition, there are lots of restaurants, stores and theatres around.

A Great Place to Live

Situated about six miles to the southwest of downtown Houston, Greenway-Upper Kirby excels with new restaurants, creative window displays and luxury high-rise apartments. Conveniently located nearby to Highway 59, the area has many major streets running through which makes it easy for residents to commute to work or enjoy a night out on the town.

Parks and Outdoor Recreation

Amongst the urban backdrop of Greenway/Upper Kirby, Levy Park is present. A small green space which offers a relaxing place to enjoy the Houston sun. This park has undergone a considerable number of improvements, which includes a fenced off space for dog owners to allow their pups to run freely and a community garden. As a densely filled residential and commercial neighborhood, park space is difficult to find, but the locals do take very good care of their local patch of greenery. The park itself is situated within the Greenway Plaza area.

Shopping

Although the Galleria Mall is situated only a few miles away from Greenway/Upper Kirby, if you have money in your pocket and do not wish to venture further out, shopping in Greenway/Upper Kirby offers a plethora of opportunities to spend. A mixed-use residential development is anchored here by upscale retail shops, West Avenue caters to wealthy locals as the one-stop place of interest for all things fancy. Pop in to Tootsie’s flagship store, and have a browse through the wide selection of high-end cocktail dresses, or maybe Rye 51 for a much more casual yet fashion-forward selection of menswear. Vanity Lounge will no doubt spruce you up for those nights out on the town with makeup application services, eyebrow threading and even makeup courses. Although a number of these stores don’t open through into the sidewalk, a private road runs through the area which encourages more pedestrian use. There is complimentary parking available, and many places locally provide valet services.

You will find many large grocery store chains, including HEB and Kroger, located within the southern part of Greenway/Upper Kirby providing locals with a great range of grocery shopping options. For greater convenience and more organic shopping options, locals are often willing to pay the a slightly higher price at the Whole Foods Market nearby to Kirby and Alabama. If you wish to opt for the freshest local produce, head on down to Urban Harvest Farmers Market located at Eastside and Richmond Avenue. The market is open each Saturday morning and offers freshly-made breakfast which range from crème brulee French toast to egg quiche.

Education

Within the neighborhood you will find Lamar High School, a public secondary school, and St. John’s School, an independent K–12 school. Residents based within Greenway/Upper Kirby are zoned to schools within the Houston Independent School District (HSID). Several elementary schools, such as River Oaks, Poe and West University serve parts of Upper Kirby. Pershing Middle School and Lanier Middle School serve individual sections of Upper Kirby, and for Pershing-zoned residents, Pin Oak Middle School is an option. All Upper Kirby is zoned to Lamar High School.
