A Lively Neighborhood

Located just west of Downtown Houston, Washington Avenue/Memorial Park is a lively neighborhood gleaming with an assortment of beautiful attractions. Local residents can enjoy access to a diverse range of cultural amenities like the Beer Can House, Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, the Art Car Museum and the immense 1,500-acre Memorial Park, which includes a golf course, running trails and a plethora of beautiful greenery.

Various eateries, stores and clubs line Washington Avenue/Memorial Park. The many attractions and sights of Downtown Houston are only a brief drive from Washington Avenue/Memorial Park too, providing endless choice for dining, shopping and nearby entertainment.

A Great Place to Live

With Memorial Park at its center, the neighborhood has grown to become one of the most well-known destinations within the city of Houston. Considered as the First Ward, Washington Avenue/Memorial has a large cluster of older buildings which were renovated and turned into apartments and condos. Bars and restaurants began moving to the area to benefit from its growth potential.

Through March, The Bayou City Art Festival occurs every spring and brings people of all ages together. Entertainment, food and games fill the park for people and their families to enjoy. The Art Colony Association hosts the festival and it is sponsored by the Houston Art Alliance and the city of Houston. The Art Car Museum contains heaps of classic vehicles which has undergone restoration.

Bus routes travel to Midtown, Downtown and the Galleria. Stops can be accessed at virtually every corner. Whilst parking meters do line the roads, most street parking is free of charge. A small number of parking garages are located near shopping centers, and many restaurants provide valet services.

Parks and Outdoor Recreation

The historic Memorial Park hosts a multitude of events each year and brings in many guests on a daily basis. Visitors can enjoy the golf course and gym, but the most used attraction is the running trail which spans nearly three miles long. The park also includes a swimming pool and six miles of mountains for bike trails and hiking. This family and pet friendly park is amongst the most visited parks within the city, and its golf course was rated one of the very best within the country. River Oaks Country Club joins to the park, and both the Nature Center and Houston Arboretum calls it home. Other parks that are nearby comprise of Buffalo Park, Cleveland Park, Spotts Park and Knox Park, which are all extremely exercise-centric and child} friendly.

Shopping

Nearby shopping malls comprise of the Galleria and Memorial City Mall. A variety of shopping centers surround the community. Major retail chains sit nearby for clothes shopping and household products. Arne’s Party Warehouse, for example, is a party supply shop selling products for all occasions. The two-story retail outlet which has been open for many years attracts visitors from all across the city and has all of the party essentials you’ll need, plus more. James Craig Furnishings makes moving into the area a breeze by supplying all of the upscale furnishings you will need for your new home.

The largest shopping centre in the whole of Texas is The Galleria, and is the fourth largest nationwide. With over 400 stores and restaurants under its magnificent atriums, three office towers, two high-rise hotels and a full sized ice-skating rink there’s plenty to keep both locals and visitors busy. The mall’s anchor stores include Tiffany & Co., Neiman Marcus, Burberry, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Cartier Nordstrom and Gianni Versace.

Education

The Washington Avenue/Memorial Park neighborhood contains several highly rated private and public schools. Generally, there is good reputation for both education as well as extracurricular activities. Local public schools comprise of Harvard Elementary School, Wharton Dual Language Academy, Travis Elementary School, Memorial Elementary School and Sinclair Elementary School. St. Thomas High School, The Kipling School and St. Theresa Catholic School are some of the nearby private schools available to residents in the Washington Avenue/Memorial Park neighborhood.
