One of Houston’s Older Neighborhoods

Montrose is a primarily residential neighborhood located in the Neartown area of Houston, and is one of Houston’s older neighborhoods. With a population of just over 21,000 residents, the neighborhood is a diverse area known for its Bohemian flavour. Properties in Montrose are a unique combination of renovated 1920s mansions, bungalows with wide porches, and cottages located along tree-lined boulevards. Montrose is also home to a diverse mix of cafes, restaurants, dive bars, vintage shops, and art galleries. Montrose offers a fusion of new and old; upscale and artsy. At 3%, the unemployment rate is low and the average commute time is under 20 minutes.

Montrose is centrally located in the Inner Loop and is one of the most accessible neighborhoods in Houston. Montrose homes have convenient access to main roads and freeways, including Richmond Avenue, Montrose Boulevard, Southwest Freeway, Shepherd Drive, Allen Parkway, and Westheimer Road, among others. Residents are therefore well connected to all the surrounding areas and have great access to key areas like Downtown, Galleria and the world-renowned Medical Center. The neighborhood is home to numerous top ranked restaurants, boutique shops, dive bars, wine lounges, music bars, cafes and pubs. Other retail and entertainment hotspots such as The River Oaks Shopping Center (one of the oldest shopping centers in the US), Rice Military, Downtown, Uptown Park, and Highland Village are all minutes away. Montrose is also, only minutes away from Houston’s world-famous Galleria mall. The Galleria, is Texas’ largest shopping center and fourth largest, nationally. The Galleria has over 400 shops and restaurants beneath its stunning atriums, two high-rise hotels, three office towers and a full-size ice-skating rink. The mall’s anchor stores include Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Co., Nordstrom, Burberry, Gianni Versace and Cartier Nordstrom and Macy’s.

Parks and Outdoor Recreation in Montrose

Montrose is one of Houston’s cultural centers home to many art museums featuring pieces from world-renowned artists. Montrose is also a host to many festivals, including the four-decade old Houston Greek Festival and the bi-annual Westheimer Colony Arts Festival. There are loads of parks in Montrose including Ervan Chew Park (a neighborhood park that allows dogs off-leash in a designated area) and Buffalo Bayou Park. Buffalo Bayou Park is 160-acre park with a 10-mile waterway. It has many features including five-foot-wide asphalt footpaths, the Barbara Fish Daniel Nature Play Area, Sandy Reed Memorial Trail and the Johnny Steele Dog Park.

Shopping in Montrose

Education

Montrose is zoned to the Houston Independent School District (HISD). It is zoned to some of the best schools in Greater Houston. Neighborhood schools include several International Baccalaureate World Schools such as Poe Elementary, Lanier Middle School, and Lamar High School. High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) is located in Montrose. It is a highly sought-after Fine Arts magnet school. Montrose also has many notable private schools nearby.
