World’s Largest Medical Center

The Texas Medical Center, located in Houston, is the largest medical center in the world. The area also has one of the highest concentrations of clinical facilities for patient care, basic science, and translational research. The Texas Medical Center was established in the mid-1940s. Today, the district features more than 50 institutions in the field of medicine. Hospitals, research institutions, medical schools, nursing schools, and other health care related schools call the district home. More heart surgeries occur in Texas Medical Center than anywhere else in the world.

The Medical Center is home to the largest children’s hospital in the world (Texas Children’s Hospital), as well as home to the largest cancer hospital in the world (MD Anderson Cancer Center). In addition to the healthcare facilities, the location features a wide selection of homes. Properties in Medical Center are mainly luxury condos, single-family homes and townhomes in private gated communities. Fannin Station, one of Houston’s Best Gated Communities, is also located with the neighborhood. Many know the Medical Center for its world-class healthcare centers, however it also offers a great location, excellent accessibility, and multi-award winning schools.

A Great Place to Live

The Medical Center area is not all about its fine institutions and healthcare facilities – the district also offers a wide variety of entertainment options. Located within the Inner Loop, the area is just a few minutes away from Downtown Houston. Other Loop 610 neighborhoods are conveniently accessible from the district, including Rice University, Museum District, and West University. The district is an ideal location to live. It provides easy access to the best that Houston has to offer. The Texas Medical Center area also has three METRORail Red Line stations, as well as direct access to two other major freeways: South and Southwest. Due to the Medical Center’s proximity to the Museum District, residents have convenient access to the city’s foremost arts and cultural center.

Parks and Outdoor Recreation

Adjacent to the Medical Center are NRG Stadium and Hermann Park. The NRG Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium and home to the Houston Texans and the Texas Bowl. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo also plays at NRG. Hermann Park is one of the city’s most visited public parks. The 445-acre park features the Houston Zoo, Houston Garden Center, Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Hermann Park Golf Course.

Shopping

The Medical Center Military is only minutes away from Houston’s world-famous Galleria mall. The Galleria, is Texas’ largest shopping center and fourth largest, nationally. The Galleria has over 400 shops and restaurants. These lay beneath its stunning atriums, two high-rise hotels, three office towers and a full-size ice-skating rink. The mall’s anchor stores include Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Co., Nordstrom, Burberry, Gianni Versace and Cartier Nordstrom and Macy’s.

Education

The Medical Center area is zoned to the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Many schools within the Medical Center are multi-award winning schools. They are ranked amongst the top in the state of Texas. Residents in Medical Center area are zoned to Roberts Elementary, Poe Elementary and Whidby Elementary School; Pershing Middle School, DeBakey High School and Lamar High School. DeBakey High School is a National Blue Ribbon School and Lamar High School is among the best schools in the Greater Houston area. It is also an IB World School. The Medical Center also has many notable private schools nearby. Higher academic institutions (mostly in the medical field) are also within the neighborhood. Among the most outstanding are Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Houston, Rice University, and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
